POLK CITY, Fla. (Oct. 12, 2010) Tie a yellow ribbon around Fantasy of Flight! For the first time ever, Fantasy of Flight and local Central Florida children are attempting to break a Guinness World Record and build the world’s largest yellow paper ribbon over Veteran’s Day weekend in honor of our troops overseas.
Fantasy of Flight is delivering supplies to local schools and youth groups that want to participate in this world record attempt. Students of all ages can draw a holiday picture or message for the troops. All of the yellow holiday greetings will then be made into a massive yellow paper ribbon and displayed at Fantasy of Flight. Organizers say the more schools, teachers, students or parents that get involved, the easier it will be to set the world record. Homeschool students, parents, church groups, Boy and Girl Scouts, book clubs – anyone of any age is encouraged to participate. If interested in receiving supplies, please contact Fantasy of Flight at 863-984-3500.
"We want our troops overseas to know how special they are," says Kim Long, General Manager, Fantasy of Flight. "This is a fantastic way for local students, friends, families and supporters to show their gratitude to our troops, while spreading some holiday cheer at the same time. We are excited about this world record attempt and look forward to working with the community to break the record."
The Guinness World Record is a red ribbon measuring 110.9 m. (363 ft., 10 in.) long creating an image 49 m. (160 ft., 9 in.) tall, and was presented at Ramakrishna Beach, in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India, on Dec. 1, 2009, World AIDS Day 2009. A Twin Lake, Mich. family attempted to break the 2009 record this past July with a six-ft. by 465.1 ft. purple ribbon that was sewn during the White Lake Relay for Life in May. It created a 219.5 ft. ribbon that is currently being reviewed by Guinness World Records.
The yellow paper ribbon campaign will culminate at Fantasy of Flight's world-renowned Roar n' Soar weekend, Nov. 13 and 14. During Roar n' Soar, the enormous yellow paper ribbon will be on display for guests to see. From there, Fantasy of Flight will send the gigantic yellow paper care package to the servicemen and women overseas through Marine Families of Polk County and other similar organizations just in time for the holidays. Marine Families of Polk County will also be working with Fantasy of Flight to help assemble the record-breaking ribbon prior in the weeks leading up to the event.
"We fully support Fantasy of Flight and their endeavors to help troops throughout the year," says Jamie Brown, President, Marine Families of Polk County. "This is an incredibly fun way to get the public involved and a way to get messages to our troops during the holidays at a time when they really need them."
