{"id":3614,"date":"2012-01-31T22:16:39","date_gmt":"2012-01-31T22:16:39","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=3614"},"modified":"2016-12-30T10:09:49","modified_gmt":"2016-12-30T15:09:49","slug":"sopwith-snipe-flies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/fantasy-of-flight\/sopwith-snipe-flies\/","title":{"rendered":"Sopwith Snipe Flies!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My Sopwith Snipe has been completed, signed-off by the authorities, and recently test-flown!<\/p>\n<p>All this is courtesy of Peter Jackson&#8217;s great interest and efforts building up very authentic reproductions of famous WWI aircraft. \u00a0As mentioned in a previous blog, I did\u00a0a trade with Peter for the Snipe and Albatros and sent down several engines they overhauled for the projects.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3620\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 613px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3620 size-full colorbox-3614\" title=\"Snipe being rigged cropped\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Snipe-being-rigged-cropped.jpg\" width=\"613\" height=\"297\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snipe being Rigged for Flight!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since this is the first Snipe built by Gene DeMarco and The Vintage Aviator Ltd. (TVAL), it took considerably longer than my Albatros, which already had a prototype flying. \u00a0I blogged about my exploits in April flying the Albatros at the Omaka Airshow.<\/p>\n<p>I chose to paint the Snipe in the colors of highly-decorated WWI Canadian Ace <em>Billy Barker,<\/em> who was the 12th highest scoring ace in WWI with 50 confirmed kills. \u00a0It represents the airplane he flew his last combat in on October 27, 1918, in which he received the Victoria Cross for his valiant efforts against enemy aircraft.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3627\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 596px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3627 size-full colorbox-3614\" title=\"Snipe by Bevan! copy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Snipe-by-Bevan-copy.jpg\" width=\"596\" height=\"343\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ready to Test-Fly!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the cooler aspects of the restoration was that Barker and his squadron mates used to put car ornaments of the time on their airplanes to <em>&#8220;personalize&#8221;<\/em> them. \u00a0Gene and his restoration crew did some research and found the ornaments are still being made for period cars . . . by the SAME COMPANY that built them in WWI! \u00a0How cool is that? \u00a0They ordered me the one Barker used . . . a Red Devil!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3633\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 482px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3633 size-full colorbox-3614\" title=\"Red Devil copy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Red-Devil-copy.jpg\" width=\"482\" height=\"599\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barker&#8217;s personalized weapon with WWI period car hood ornament!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Snipe uses the largest Rotary engine ever built: a British Bentley BR-2 with 230 hp! \u00a0I have seen videos of it running on a test stand and can&#8217;t wait to get it back to hear it in person. \u00a0Better yet, fly behind it!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3632\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 570px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3632 size-full colorbox-3614\" title=\"Snipe Flying! copy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Snipe-Flying-copy.jpg\" width=\"570\" height=\"380\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">She Flies!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As I write this, both the Snipe and the Albatros are on a ship headed to Florida. \u00a0We hope to have them assembled and flying\u00a0at Fantasy of Flight and by the end of March in time for the 2012\u00a0Sun &#8216;n Fun Fly-In!<\/p>\n<p>Kermit<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My Sopwith Snipe has been completed, signed-off by the authorities, and recently test-flown!
