{"id":4547,"date":"2012-04-22T17:14:08","date_gmt":"2012-04-22T21:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=4547"},"modified":"2018-11-08T13:09:32","modified_gmt":"2018-11-08T18:09:32","slug":"benny-flies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/fantasy-of-flight\/benny-flies\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Benny&#8221; flies!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I finally got to fly my Benny Howard &#8220;IKE&#8221; replica a couple of times recently, but not before a few setbacks.\u00a0\u00a0It took us forever to sort out a brake problem, and then I had to figure out a way to fit in!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Benny&#8221; is a character that shows up in my first illustrated children&#8217;s book called <em>All of Life is a School<\/em> that uses Golden Age airplanes to help tell the story.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4557\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 509px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/5-Kermit-in-Ike-flight1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4557    colorbox-4547\" title=\"5 - Kermit in Ike flight\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/5-Kermit-in-Ike-flight1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"509\" height=\"415\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coming &#39;round a pylon!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The builder of this airplane, Kim Kovach, and the\u00a0original pilot, were both smaller than me. \u00a0I believe the original pilot flew barefoot while Kim modified a pair of shoes to get in. \u00a0So I took his advice, grabbed an old pair of sneakers, and headed to the wood shop.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4549\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 506px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/1-Band-Sawing-Shoes1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4549    colorbox-4547\" title=\"1- Band Sawing Shoes\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/1-Band-Sawing-Shoes1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"506\" height=\"422\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Modifying an old pair of sneakers!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After grinding off the heels down and sawing the toes off, I found that I could get in and operate the brakes without a problem. \u00a0There&#8217;s not much room to spare, as I find my toes tickling the bottom of the fuel tank!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4553\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 537px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/2-Tennis-Shoes1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4553      colorbox-4547\" title=\"2 - Tennis Shoes\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/2-Tennis-Shoes1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"537\" height=\"401\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heels and Toes ready for Action!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As in the original, your heels and butt actually go down <em>below<\/em> the floorboards. \u00a0I had to wrap up a towel for a lumbar support so I could lean back and get my head down into the cockpit as well, which raised my knees to just below the panel and somewhat in the way of the throttle.<\/p>\n<p>The only modification Kim made to the original dimensions was to extend the 18-inch fuselage width at the instrument panel back to the rear of the cockpit where your shoulders are. \u00a0Without it, and even with my shoulders rolled forward and\u00a0inward, I just barely fit. \u00a0It&#8217;s hard to believe the original shoulder dimension was only <em>15 inches!<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4555\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 558px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/3-On-Ramp1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4555      colorbox-4547\" title=\"3 - On Ramp\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fantasyofflight.com\/collection\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/3-On-Ramp1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"558\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taxiing out<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the things that became immediately apparent was how rough it taxies on my grass runways. \u00a0As per the original, there is NO shock absorption built into the landing gear!
